"How do we prioritize each other when we're both so busy?" - Sandra, UK.
Hi there, Sandra. This is a challenge for lots of us! Life is really so busy, finding time for the people who matter most is tough. Here are a few things that will help you...
Stay in touch with your spouse throughout the day; send a little text or a funny photo or a quick call. Doing this takes almost no time and lets your spouse know he's always on your mind.
Set aside a few minutes every night to talk. Ask about his day, his challenges, his thoughts.
Give praise and appreciation where appropriate, empathize with feelings and challenges.
Plan a date night (or lunch, whatever works for you guys) for once a week. Try to make this a kid and distraction free time so that you guys can really focus on each other. Try to have fun and play frequently; all of us thrive when we are having fun with someone who loves us.
If you're really busy, I think it's important that you get a good return on investment (ROI) from your efforts. What I mean by this, is that if you only have 1 hour per day to devote to your marriage, spend that 1 hour doing things that really matter and will get you a lot of bang for your buck.
Spend some time thinking about what makes you feel most loved, then think about what makes your spouse feel most loved. Chat with your spouse about this and come up with a game plan together.
Maybe you two will conclude that the best way for you to spend an hour a day together is to have coffee before the kids wake up (15 minutes), text/talk at lunch time (10 minutes), watch 1 TV show together after the kids go to bed (30 minutes), and have a 5 minute cuddle session in bed. Whatever you choose, make it high impact with good ROI for your time.
